Luis Jesus Martinez – born on July 14, 1947 in The Bronx, New York to a Puerto Rican father and a mother of Bonairian and Puerto Rican descent from Brooklyn. After moving to Mine Hill, New Jersey in the summer of 1956, he studied fine arts at St. John’s University before graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Art Education from Montclair State College in May of 1971.

Martinez traveled across the U.S., the Caribbean, Europe, and Morocco before pursuing a variety of jobs, including those in a factory, warehouse, and as a taxi driver. He later worked at Child Care Centers, Morris County Hispanic Organization as an English teacher, Dover Neighborhood Center as a director, and an Admissions Counselor for County College of Morris for over 25 years. Martinez also played an important role in conducting projects and programs aimed to engage the Morris County Latino community.

Although Martinez retired from CCM in 2014, he continued participating in the NJ State Judicial Committee through Covid’s arrival, as well as family and pre-school student programs. As an artist, he increased his painting and musical outlet by showcasing his work through festivals and exhibits that highlight various cultural aspects of the country, especially Latino presentations.

The life of Luis Jesus Martinez is an inspiring story of a man who persevered through difficult circumstances and made significant contributions to the arts and his local community.
