Manuel Torres – Top Latino Educator
Brownsville, TX /LWW/ Mr. Manuel Torres, retired Director for Adult and Continuing Education at the University of Texas at Brownsville, has been recognized by the Top Latinos in the 2026 edition.

For over four decades, Mr. Manuel Torres has been a beacon of hope, transformation, and opportunity in the field of education. His career, marked by unwavering dedication and a profound impact on countless lives, is a testament to the power of education as a tool for change. From his early days as an educator to his role as Director for Adult and Continuing Education at the University of Texas at Brownsville, Mr. Torres has left an indelible mark on the communities he has served.
Mr. Torres’s passion for education was most evident in his work with the adult community. Recognizing the challenges faced by individuals who had not completed high school, he made it his mission to provide them with a second chance. Under his leadership, programs were developed to help adults earn their high school diplomas, opening doors to new opportunities. But Mr. Torres didn’t stop there—he inspired many of these individuals to pursue higher education, with some even going on to become educators themselves. His ability to empower others to believe in their potential is one of his proudest achievements.
During his tenure with Brownsville Independent School District (BISD), Mr. Torres was a pioneer in introducing young students to the world of science and robotics. He played an instrumental role in creating programs that allowed children to attend college campuses after school and during the summer, giving them an early glimpse into the possibilities of higher education and STEM fields. These initiatives, which were groundbreaking at the time, have since become standard programs in schools, continuing to inspire future generations.
Mr. Torres’s own educational journey is as inspiring as the programs he championed. Graduating with high honors from Pan American University (now the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley) with a Bachelor of Business Administration, he went on to earn a Master’s in Adult Education from Texas A&I University Kingsville (now Texas A&M Kingsville). He also pursued doctoral studies at the University of Houston, demonstrating his commitment to lifelong learning and professional growth.
Before embarking on his career in education, Mr. Torres served his country with honor as a United States Marine Corps veteran during the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1969. His time in the military instilled in him a sense of discipline, resilience, and service—qualities that would define his approach to education and leadership.
Despite his many accomplishments, Mr. Torres remains humble, attributing his success to the guidance and mentorship of two influential figures: Administrator Art McDonald and Superintendent Raul Besteiro. Their support and belief in his potential fueled his drive to make a difference in the lives of others.
As Mr. Torres reflects on his remarkable career, he takes pride not in accolades or titles, but in the lives he has touched and the futures he has helped shape. His work has empowered adults to achieve dreams they once thought impossible, inspired young minds to explore new horizons, and laid the foundation for programs that continue to benefit communities today.
Mr. Manuel Torres’s legacy is one of service, innovation, and compassion. He has shown that education is not just about imparting knowledge—it is about transforming lives, building communities, and inspiring others to reach their full potential. His story is a powerful reminder that one person’s dedication can create a ripple effect of positive change for generations to come.
