Dr. Jose Marquez-Leon: Bridging the Digital Divide and Empowering a Community

In the heart of Norcross, Georgia, a visionary leader has spent nearly three decades transforming the landscape of technology and opportunity for the Latino community. Dr. Jose Marquez-Leon, PhD, CEO of TechLatino: The National Association of Latinos in Information Sciences and Technology, is a man driven by purpose, passion, and an unwavering belief in the power of connection.
Born with a natural curiosity for engineering and technology, Dr. Marquez-Leon’s journey began at Rutgers University–Newark, where he earned his degree in Engineering. His early career saw him excelling in roles at AT&T and MI8, where he honed his skills in sales engineering and channel management. But even as he climbed the corporate ladder, he felt a deeper calling—to use his expertise to uplift his community.
In 1997, Dr. Marquez-Leon co-founded TechLatino (formerly LISTA), a professional organization dedicated to empowering Latinos in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). What began as a grassroots initiative has grown into a national movement with 15 chapters and over 8,000 members. Under his leadership, TechLatino has become a beacon of hope and opportunity, bridging the digital divide and ensuring that Latinos have a seat at the table in the ever-evolving tech industry.
Dr. Marquez-Leon’s impact extends far beyond the organization’s impressive numbers. He has been a tireless advocate for cultural recognition and inclusion in STEM fields, understanding that representation matters. Through initiatives like the Emerging Tech Leadership Summit and the Latinas Tech and Business Leaders Luncheon, he has created platforms for Latino professionals to share their stories, build networks, and inspire the next generation.
One of his proudest achievements has been preserving the STEM assets within the Hispanic community. Recognizing the challenges faced by Latino doctors in navigating electronic medical records and compliance regulations, TechLatino has provided critical support to ensure these professionals can continue serving their communities. “We have an epidemic of few doctors that serve our community, and we don’t want to lose any more,” Dr. Marquez-Leon has said, highlighting his commitment to addressing systemic issues.
Dr. Marquez-Leon’s leadership philosophy is rooted in the power of networking. He believes that no one should have to tackle challenges alone, and he has dedicated his career to building bridges—between individuals, industries, and opportunities. His work on the Board of Directors at the Gas South District and Gwinnett Convention and Visitors Bureau further exemplifies his dedication to fostering collaboration and driving progress.
In 2021, Dr. Marquez-Leon earned his doctorate in Humanitarian Studies from Global International Alliance University, a testament to his lifelong commitment to service. But for him, the true measure of success lies not in titles or accolades, but in the lives he has touched and the barriers he has helped dismantle.
Today, TechLatino stands as a testament to Dr. Marquez-Leon’s vision and perseverance. It is a community where seasoned professionals and aspiring students alike can find mentorship, resources, and inspiration. It is a movement that celebrates the contributions of Latinos in technology while paving the way for a more inclusive future.
Dr. Jose Marquez-Leon’s story is one of resilience, innovation, and unwavering dedication to his community. Through his work, he has not only empowered thousands of individuals but has also shown the world the transformative power of leadership rooted in purpose. As he often says, “The future is ours to create—together.”
