Asbury Park, NJ/LWW/Mr. Felipe O. Rose, Owner of Felipe Music Production LLC and Disco Icon has been recognized by the Top Latinos in the 2026 edition.
Felipe O. Rose is a name synonymous with disco, cultural pride, and advocacy. With a career spanning over four decades, Felipe has left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry and beyond, blending his artistic talents with a deep commitment to social justice and cultural preservation.
Born to a Native American father and a Puerto Rican-Italian mother, Felipe’s heritage is a vibrant tapestry of cultures. His father, a welder who moved to New York City during the Indian Relocation Act of the 1950s, and his mother, a professional dancer at the iconic Copacabana Nightclub, instilled in him a love for the arts and a strong sense of identity. Adopted by his Native father, Felipe grew up immersed in rhythm and movement, honing his craft as a dancer with the Ballet de Puerto Rico under the mentorship of Pasqual Guzman.
Despite growing up in the challenging neighborhood of Brownsville, Brooklyn, Felipe’s passion for the arts and his commitment to social justice flourished. His early performances, including ballet at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, showcased his immense talent and set the stage for a groundbreaking career.
In 1977, Felipe’s life changed forever when he co-founded the legendary disco group The Village People alongside French producer Jacques Morali and lead singer-songwriter Victor Willis. Felipe’s captivating Native American persona, complete with sleigh bells around his ankles, inspired the group’s concept of embodying iconic American male archetypes. The Village People quickly became a global sensation, selling over 150 million records and producing timeless hits like “Y.M.C.A.,” “Macho Man,” and “In The Navy.” Their anthem “Y.M.C.A.” was immortalized in the U.S. Library of Congress National Recording Registry in 2020 and inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2021.
Beyond his success with The Village People, Felipe has showcased his versatility as an actor, appearing in films like “Can’t Stop The Music” and on television shows such as “The Love Boat” and “Soul Train.” His charisma and talent have taken him on 39 world tours, making him a global ambassador of disco.
In 2008, The Village People received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and Felipe was inducted into the Native American Music Hall of Fame for his solo contributions to Native music. Over the years, he has earned five Native American Music Awards (Nammys), further solidifying his legacy.
Felipe’s commitment to social justice is as integral to his identity as his music. He has tirelessly advocated for Native American communities, LGBTQ+ rights, and equality. From supporting the American Indian College Fund to participating in World Pride celebrations, Felipe uses his platform to amplify important causes. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he organized virtual fundraisers and promoted public health measures, demonstrating his dedication to helping others.
After leaving The Village People in 2017, Felipe embarked on a solo career, releasing music that reflects his passion and resilience. His 2018 cover of “Going Back To My Roots” earned him another Nammy, and his 2021 single “Dance Again” became a hopeful anthem for fans worldwide. Felipe also launched “The Disco Chronicles” podcast, preserving the vibrant history of the disco era through interviews with iconic DJs, producers, and artists.
In 2022, Felipe collaborated on “Peace for Ukraine,” a poignant musical plea for global unity, and in 2023, he released his fifth single, “That’s What You Are.” Currently, he is crafting a one-man show to share his story in an intimate and raw setting.
As a disco historian and mentor, Felipe continues to inspire new generations. Under the management of Michael Debarge, he has re-emerged on social media, addressing controversies and sharing his wealth of knowledge. His life is a testament to the power of music, cultural pride, and advocacy, ensuring that the rhythm of disco and the messages of equality and love endure.
Felipe O. Rose is not just a disco icon; he is a relentless innovator, advocate, and cultural ambassador. His journey is a celebration of artistic expression, heritage, and the unwavering belief in the power of music to heal and unite.
