His leadership, vision, and ability to collaborate with staff, volunteers, and boards of directors have made him a cornerstone of the community.
The Commission on Disability, where Acevedo serves, plays a vital role in addressing the needs and concerns of citizens with disabilities in Los Angeles. Jorge Acevedo’s journey has been anything but easy. On Christmas Day in 1999, his life took a tragic turn when he was the victim of a drive-by shooting that left him in a wheelchair. Despite spending months in a coma and facing unimaginable challenges, Acevedo refused to let this setback define him. Instead, he channeled his energy into education and service, earning a degree in Criminal Justice in 2004 and becoming a tireless advocate for accessibility and inclusion.
In 2015, Acevedo faced another hurdle when he suffered a brain hemorrhage that temporarily left half of his body paralyzed. Yet again, he demonstrated remarkable resilience, undergoing rehabilitation and steadily regaining movement. His determination to overcome these obstacles serves as an inspiration to countless individuals facing their own challenges.
Acevedo’s professional journey is a testament to his dedication to public service. For over two decades, he has worked and volunteered for the City of Glendale, where he has been an integral part of the Glendale Police Department. From community outreach to media relations, Acevedo has worn many hats, always going above and beyond to support his colleagues and the community. His work includes preserving the department’s history, mentoring youth, and serving as a community liaison.
In addition to his role with the Glendale Police Department, Acevedo is the founding member of Delta Sigma Omicron, a non-profit organization that helps students with disabilities achieve their academic goals. His efforts have not gone unnoticed; in 2008, he was recognized by the U.S. Department of Justice for his dedication to victims of crime.
As a Commissioner for the City of Los Angeles, Acevedo is driven by a vision of a city where everyone, regardless of ability, can enjoy reasonable accommodations and full accessibility. Appointed by former Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and reappointed by Mayor Eric Garcetti, Acevedo takes great pride in serving a city he loves deeply.
