In the heart of Colorado Springs, a man of extraordinary dedication and resilience is stepping forward to lead. Mateo Montoya-Collis, a career law enforcement officer, decorated athlete, and advocate for education, is running as the Democratic candidate for El Paso County Sheriff in the 2026 election. His journey is one of perseverance, service, and an unwavering commitment to building bridges within his community.
Mateo’s story begins in Denver, where he grew up in a neighborhood shaped by challenges. Surrounded by gang activity, he found his way out through sports and discipline. At Thomas Jefferson High School, he excelled on the baseball field, earning accolades for his talent and determination. His athletic journey continued with scholarship opportunities at the University of Saint Mary and Western State, where he pursued his passion for Fine and Studio Arts. These early experiences taught him the value of hard work, focus, and the transformative power of mentorship.
In 2005, Mateo began his career in law enforcement with the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office. Over the next two decades, he served in various capacities, including Patrol, Court Services, and Detentions. As a Training Officer and Lead Gang Instructor at the Highlands Ranch Law Enforcement Training Facility, he developed prevention and intervention programs that addressed the root causes of crime. Mateo’s approach to public safety is grounded in the belief that investing in people is the key to creating lasting change.
Beyond his professional achievements, Mateo’s life is a testament to the power of pursuing one’s passions. As a 16-time National Champion and 10-time USATF National Medalist, he has represented his community on the global stage at the World Police & Fire Games. His athletic accomplishments are matched by his dedication to coaching, where he inspires athletes of all ages to reach their full potential.
Mateo’s creativity shines through in his work as an illustrator and co-author of four beloved children’s books: The Happy Police Horse, Julie’s Wish, A Good Day for Teamwork, and What It Takes to Be Brave. These stories reflect his belief in the importance of teamwork, bravery, and kindness — values he embodies in every aspect of his life. Whether throwing the ceremonial first pitch at a Colorado Rockies game or mentoring students through the Breakthrough Kent Denver program, Mateo’s actions consistently reflect his commitment to uplifting others.
Through Breakthrough Kent Denver, Mateo connects with high school students, offering them a firsthand look at careers in law, public safety, and civic leadership. This program is deeply personal to him, as it mirrors the support he received during his own journey. By mentoring young people and introducing them to professionals across the justice system, Mateo helps open doors and break down barriers, ensuring that the next generation has the tools to succeed.
As a candidate for El Paso County Sheriff, Mateo’s platform emphasizes transparency, education, and fiscal responsibility. He is committed to restoring public trust by fostering open communication and implementing programs that reduce recidivism. His vision for the department is one of accountability and collaboration, where every member of the community feels seen, heard, and valued.
Mateo Montoya-Collis is more than a law enforcement officer or an athlete. He is a leader who understands the importance of connection, a mentor who believes in the potential of every individual, and a public servant dedicated to making his community stronger. His life’s work is a reflection of his belief that real safety and progress come from investing in people and building bridges that unite us all.
As the 2026 election approaches, Mateo’s candidacy offers a vision of hope, integrity, and a brighter future for El Paso County.
