Michael Gallegos Deputy Sheriff NM, USMC Veteran

Some lives are measured not by years alone but by the steady commitment behind them, and Michael Gallegos has lived exactly that kind of life. For more than three decades, he served as a Deputy Sheriff with the Albuquerque, New Mexico Sheriff’s Department, answering the call to protect his community day after day. Thirty years is a long time to give to public service, and Michael gave it fully, carrying the same sense of duty into every shift that he first learned years earlier in uniform of a different kind.

Before he ever pinned on a deputy’s badge, Michael wore the uniform of the United States Marine Corps. From 1973 to 1978, he served as a Sergeant, E-5, with a military occupational specialty of 2542 Communications, and he held the respected role of Embassy Marine. That assignment carried real weight, placing him among those trusted to safeguard American interests far from home. Stationed in Germany, he stood watch and protected his country at a time when steady hands and clear minds mattered greatly. The Marine Corps also gave him something he speaks of with genuine gratitude, the chance to see the world and understand his place in it. He remains deeply proud of those years, and he is not alone in that pride. His brother also answered the call, serving in the Marine Corps and fighting for America, a shared family devotion to the nation that speaks volumes about the values they were raised on.

The discipline Michael absorbed as a Marine never left him. It shaped how he approached his work, his relationships, and the choices that defined his path. One of the clearest examples came just three months after September 11, 2001, when he earned his pilot’s wings. At a moment when the country was shaken and uncertain, Michael pressed forward, taking to the skies and proving once again that determination does not waver when it is built on a solid foundation.

Ask Michael about the secret to his success, and his answer is rooted in conviction rather than chance. He credits the Marine Corps for teaching him structure and resolve, and he credits his faith in God for giving him purpose and peace. He prays constantly, drawing strength from that connection in good times and hard ones alike. He lives by the United States Constitution, holding its principles close as a guide for how a free people should treat one another. And he treats everyone fairly, extending the same respect to all, a habit that has earned him trust throughout his long career and beyond it.

Today, Michael carries another title he wears with deep pride, that of father to three daughters and grandfather to the generation that follows. The same dedication he brought to his country and his community lives on at home, in the love he gives his family and the example he sets for them. His story is a reminder that a life of service, faith, and fairness leaves a mark that lasts far longer than any single career. Michael Gallegos has spent his years giving to others, and in doing so, he has shown what it truly means to live with honor.
