Richard E. Dominguez - Comic Books, Artist, El Gato Negro

Richard E. Dominguez, born Eufrancio Ricardo Dominguez on September 22, 1960, in Dallas, Texas, to Ricardo and Juanita Dominguez, grew up as the second of seven children in a section of West Dallas known during the Great Depression as “The Devil’s Back Porch.” Despite the challenges of his environment, Richard’s childhood was filled with curiosity and creativity. At the age of six, he discovered his first love—comic books—by sneaking into his uncle’s room to read from his extensive collection. This early exposure to the colorful world of superheroes planted the seeds of a lifelong passion.

In high school, Richard pursued his artistic talents by enrolling in Commercial Art courses and later taking Life Drawing classes at a community college. His early career saw him working at a local supermarket chain, where he created and painted point-of-purchase displays. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, Richard honed his craft further by interning at various art and design studios, designing logos for semi-pro sports teams and small businesses. These experiences laid the foundation for his future as a comic book creator.

Richard’s journey into the comic book industry was fueled by a realization: there was a glaring lack of Latino representation in mainstream comics. Inspired by his heritage and the stories he wanted to see, Richard decided to create his own path. In 1993, he founded Azteca Productions, and its first publication introduced the world to El Gato Negro – Nocturnal Warrior. The story followed Francisco Guerrero, a social worker by day and a crime-fighting vigilante by night, inspired by his grandfather, the original El Gato Negro—a legendary luchador. This multi-generational narrative resonated deeply with readers, offering a hero who reflected their culture and experiences.

Richard’s work was influenced by his mentor, Judge Margarito Garza, a Corpus Christi criminal judge and the creator of Relampago, the first Mexican-American superhero. Judge Garza’s encouragement and belief in Richard’s talent gave him the confidence to bring his vision to life. Richard’s dedication to his craft and his community didn’t stop there. In 1995, he co-founded the Professional Amigos of Comic Art Society (PACAS) alongside Carlos Saldaña, Jose Martinez, and Fernando Rodriguez. This non-profit organization aimed to unite cartoonists, writers, colorists, letterers, and publishers, fostering collaboration and expanding opportunities within the comic art community. Over time, PACAS grew to include over fifty members, including international creators like Oscar Loyo and the ¡Ka-Boom! Estudio group from Mexico.

In 1997, Richard expanded Azteca Productions’ offerings with the debut of Team Tejas, created in collaboration with writer Michael S. Moore. However, the rise and fall of the speculative market in the late 1990s led to a temporary halt in publications, allowing Richard to focus on his family life. He returned in 2004 with a second series of El Gato Negro, featuring Moore as the writer and Efren Molina as the artist. Richard’s creative endeavors continued to grow, with current projects including Lucha Grande Comics, which explores the exploits of the original El Gato Negro, as well as The Acolyte, Demon Hunter and Tonatiuh the Almighty.

Among the many fans of El Gato Negro was actor and singer Diego Boneta, who was so inspired by the story that he approached Richard with the idea of adapting it for the big screen. Boneta pitched the project to MGM, and in 2024, filming began in Mexico City. The movie, now in post-production, is set for release in late 2026, marking a major milestone for Richard and his creation.

Today, Richard E. Dominguez is represented by Rain Management Group and The Gersh Agency, solidifying his place as a creative force in the entertainment industry. His work has not only paved the way for greater Latino representation in comics but has also inspired countless artists and storytellers to follow their dreams. Reflecting on his journey, Richard often says, “I had the ink of the artwork in my blood all along. With all your desire, you can make it happen. The ink better be in your blood.”

For those looking to explore the world of El Gato Negro, Richard’s books are available on Amazon, including El Gato Negro – Nocturnal Warrior: The Collection. His story is a testament to the power of perseverance, passion, and the belief that representation matters.

From his humble beginnings in West Dallas to his rise as a celebrated comic book creator, Richard E. Dominguez has shown the world that heroes aren’t just found in the pages of comics—they’re also the ones who create them.
